SO. I love writing Discworld fanfic because there's so much random joy to plumb and I need to revisit Ankh Morpork, which means, I think, a City Watch reread (+ Maskerade) until Night Watch. :DDDDDDDDD
I am in a Discworld mood, um.
I was thinking of East Asian characters in Discworld last night, and here is a list of biracial characters just off the top of my head:
- Constable Feeney Upshot, of course
- Lobsang Ludd
- Jeremy Clockson
The Valley of the History Monks is pretty much fantasy Tibet, so, as I said on Tumblr yesterday, if ever a Discworld/ATLA crossover, I would have Aang interacting with history monks. (THEY USE MARTIAL ARTS TO SLICE TIME, THAT IS TIMEBENDING AND THE ORIGINAL TIMEBENDERS WERE THE YETI, that is why when you want to learn how to save your time before you die and return to that point after your initial death, you must, like Lu Tze, spend time with the yeti.)
Interesting Times is alllllll about fantasy East Asia based on China and Japan, but I don't know if I want to reread it. Twoflower is an Asian tourist. His daughter is a ninja.
(Is Discworld problematic about some of this? Yes. I am also kind of ehhh about trolls being coded as black in Thud! with the drugs thing but I can't really speak on that. However, the nature of Discworld is such that characters transcend their archetypes to become more fully fleshed out. Though, okay, I don't think that happened in Interesting Times. Rincewind series problems.)
